HDMA Under Fire

March 11, 2018

Call Sen. Tillis and Burr and ask them to oppose gutting the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. It requires mortgage lenders to give information to HUD that can be analyzed to find patterns of discrimination. Without this data, it is virtually impossible to prove that housing discrimination is occurring. The fact that this is being considered at the same time that the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Agency removed anti-discrimination and fair housing practices from their mission statement should heighten our concern.

Burr DC office: (202) 224-3154
Burr Winston-Salem office: (336) 631-5125

Tillis DC office: (202) 224-6342
Tillis Raleigh office: (919) 856-4630

Key talking points:

-Please oppose any legislation that guts the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. Specifically, please support Senator Cortez Mastro's amendment that would strip language gutting the HMDA from S.2155.

-The data we get from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) is vital because it demonstrates patterns of whether lenders are serving the housing needs of their communities; it sheds light on lending patterns that could be discriminatory; and it gives public officials and policy advocates information that help them make decisions and establish policies;

-As currently written, S. 2155 would exempt 85% of lenders from fully reporting HMDA data which is used to identify discrimination in mortgage lending.
