Mother of the Year

Chapel Hill Carrboro NAACP is pleased to announce that Mrs. Lillie Lee Perry will be our 2018 Mother of the Year!

Lillie Lee Perry, the second of six children born to the late Robert Lee and Susie Burnett Perry on July 15,1940. She is a native of Chapel Hill, NC and has lived in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area all of her life. A 1958 graduate of Lincoln High School, she also graduated from Durham Technical Institute of Practical Nursing in 1960. Immediately after graduating, she was employed at
North Carolina Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1996.

In 1961 she was married to Cleavon Atwater and they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Jo Ann and Donna. Lillie is known around town for her infectious smile and her willingness to always jump in wherever and wherever needed. Lillie is a two-time breast cancer survivor and is often sought out to serve as an advocate and spokesperson for cancer awareness. She has been featured in photos, brochures and videos. She also offers face-to- face support to cancer survivors from all walks of life. She continues to deliver much needed cancer awareness to the African American community. A faithful Trustee of the Cathedral of Hope Church where her faith is reignited constantly, Lillie’s wish was to be a good Christian, a good wife and a good mother.
