The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Branch of the NAACP awards annual scholarships to high school seniors selected from among the four high schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System. The recipient must be entering a four‐year college/university OR a two-year community college. The scholarships recognize academic achievement, civic engagement, leadership qualities and strong character. Each initial scholarship is in the amount of $1,000, of which $500 is renewable subject to criteria.
New Scholarship applications are due at 5pm on Thursday, April 23rd, 2021.
Finalists’ interviews will be scheduled the week of May 3rd, 2021.
Scholarship renewal applications for previous recipients are due August 1st, 2021.
Eligibility Requirements - New Scholarships
Applicants must be an underrepresented ethnic/racial minority student currently enrolled as a high school senior at one of the district’s four high schools. Applicants for the Ashley Osment Scholarship must plan to pursue a field of study that focuses on civil, social and/or human rights.
Applicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Applicants must have a letter of acceptance from a four‐year college/university OR a community/technical college.
Two letters of recommendation must include the reference’s name, address, phone number and position or title; how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant; description of the applicant’s motivation, leadership skills and potential for academic success; description of the applicant’s distinctive qualities or unique characteristics.
Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other civic and/or community activities.
NOTE:
Finalists’ interviews will be scheduled the week of May 3rd, 2021. The scholarship recipient will be contacted by a representative from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP Education Committee.
Verification of enrollment to a four-year college or university or to a two-year community college program must be presented to a Chapel Hill-Carrboro Education Committee Representative before the scholarship can be released.
Eligibility Requirements - Renewing Scholarships
Applicants must be previous Chapel Hill-Carrboro Branch of the NAACP 2018-2019 scholarship recipients.
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for the 2019-2020 school year.
Applicants must provide proof of continuous enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year in a four-year college or university or a two-year community college program.
