Branch condemns anti-LGBTQ bills

Writer: Chapel Hill Carrboro NAACPChapel Hill Carrboro NAACP

As Chapel Hill and Carrboro representatives of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, we condemn North Carolina House Bill 358, known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, and Senate Bill 514, known as the Youth Health Protection Act.

These bills directly contradict our mission, which is to ensure educational and social equality of rights of all persons, and they specifically discriminate against transgender youth. Our children deserve to participate in sports and activities that match their gender identities and express those identities freely.

HB 358 and SB 514 would set a harmful precedent by further stigmatizing transgender youth who instead deserve the utmost protection. We oppose the proposed legislation as we do any form of discrimination.
